Yoga helps with concentration!

This weeks yoga benefit is concentration.  In our modern day of technology and social media, we rarely stop in an average day. We hear people saying a lot, “Jeeesh, that week (month, year) just flew by”. Part of this can be attributed to the cell phones, tablets and computers we carry everywhere with us. Think about the last time you took a bathroom break and didn’t have your phone with you in your hand the whole time. Distraction and obsessive ‘multi-tasking’ is one of the neurosis of our time, and the result is that now we don’t know how to stop muti-tasking. We see this a lot with new yogi’s, for the untrained mind laying still in savasana is very hard to do, we see them wiggling their fingers, shaking their legs etc.

So how does Yoga help with concentration you ask? Concentration is shifting your focus from many things at once to one thing at a time. Observing your body, breath and emotions through the yoga practice teaches you to focus your mind on one thing at a time, and oh it is heavenly when we finally remember how to slow down. When we move into savasana in class our teacher Constance leads the class down with a soothing body scan, releasing one muscle at a time starting with the toes. Once we have released all the way through the body and out the top of our head, we are guided into savasana with the following statement, “Let’s go inside to that little island of peace that exists in us all. To get there, follow the breath, and let the mind grow still….” It is proven that as you observe your breath, it will slow down, and that as the breath slows down, the mind will follow suit. Over time practicing focus will shift you into a restful but aware state, which will recharge the mind and can help with enhanced mental facility and creativity, in essence you finish savasana feeling energized and ready to take on your day. Sound amazing? 😀
